Birthday Wishes: Making Me a Better Me!

Hey Readers!

Today is my birthday (hooray!)!

Reese Speaks Birthday Pic 2

It’s been a bit crazy since my last post. After the New Year, the kids and I being sick on and off for what seems like an eternity, and keeping up with my day-to-day tasks, it seems as though I can (finally) breathe a bit more and share more posts here!

Now that I have rescheduled my ever-evolving schedule, I am able to see where I can make the time to do little things to make me an even better me from this moment forward.  I guess you can sort of call it a birthday gift to me from me! By setting these goals, I feel as though I am starting a challenge and then building on them as I achieve them. Here are some of the things I am doing or am going to start doing to make me a better me.

Tiger Push-Up, say what?!

That is what I said when learning this exercise move. After doing a book review at the beginning of this year, I realized I had to get myself into gear and do what I kept trying to do for the past few years: becoming more active. I took tips from a book for high intensity interval training (HIIT) to start a workout regime so I can get moving and grooving more than just on mundane Monday mornings. It is a series of different workouts to I carved out time to start working out during the week. Now I enjoy my ‘stories’ while I work up a sweat all in the comfort of my living room.

See the pic above? This is all I use to get my butt in gear. Why the card? It is so I can go for a trek to the library and borrow other books and DVDs to work out to. Not a lot is needed to become more active. It is more of a mental game to overcome than a physical one for me. I now am less winded when climbing the hills that lead up to my home with groceries and kids in tow, and I sleep more soundly as well.

Idle hands, my friends…

Reese Speaks Hobbies Photo

I like a challenge, so I decided to try my hand at two new hobbies this year: photography and flower arrangement. I have always admired how people are able to capture fabulous photos of how they view the world, yet for some reason, never got into it. Since having kids and then becoming a blogger, I have also become more of a shutterbug. I love taking pics of almost EVERYTHING we do! I then bit the bullet and got myself a proper camera to become even better at this craft!

As for floral arrangement, it another field I have always wanted to try. Putting flowers into a vase may seem like a simple task to accomplish, but is a whole art to doing it that I want to explore! I also want to learn more about flora and to cultivate more of a green thumb. This know-how will come in handy for the Big Day  my guy and I are planning, so I want to be able to put a few handmade arrangement together to decorate our space.

Love the title of this section, huh! 😛 Books have always been a passion of mine! With the arrival of my kids, they have taken a bit of a backseat to diaper changes, breaking up grudge matches and the every day life of a family of five. Now that the kids are a bit more independent, I can finally rekindle my romance with the written word.

From DIY and how-to guides to mythology, myth & symbol and teen fiction, I love getting lost in these amazing worlds of wonder! So far, I have gotten through only three books since the beginning of the year, but my goal is to get through twenty books by the end of the year.

These are just a few things I want to do to make this new chapter of this life a fun and exciting one! There are so many adventures I want to take (and that I want to take you, Readers), and I can’t wait to do it all! As I blow out the candles on my b-day cake, I will be looking forward to the challenges life throws at me, and to overcome it with a smile on my face!

Mundane Monday Morning Music: Meghan Trainor: “Better When I’m Dancin'”

Mornin’ Readers,

Easter Monday is here. It is a cold and gray affair, raining cats and dogs. I know that rain is part of the spring experience, but not for the end of a holiday weekend! It is also adding to the dreariness of Monday morning.

Since Easter is all about fun and colour, I thought I’d go with this pop number for my MMMM pick this week: Meghan Trainor’s “Better When I’m Dancin’.” Ever since I heard it played in The Peanuts Movie a few months ago, it has been dancing around in my head and making me smile. This is the second Meghan Trainor song I’ve fallen in love with for the simple fact that they are inspiring. They get you to want to become more confident.  Check out these lyrics:

“Show the world you’ve got that fire (fire)
Feel the rhythm getting louder
Show the room what you can do
Prove to them you got the moves…”

This song is about dancing, but it also applies to how to approach life. Meghan Trainor’s encouraging people who may be a bit shy to get out there and show the world what you’ve got. No one else truly know what you’re capable of but you, so it’s up to you to do it. Sometimes, some people just need to hear words of encouragement to step outside of their shell to become great. Besides, I have to start dancing when I hear this song, too!  😛

I hope that “Better When I’m Dancin'” brings some colour, encouragement and a smile while you’re dancing on this other than stellar mundane Monday morning!

Until my next post, Readers!

Winter Family Adventures in Photos

Hey Readers!

Well, March Break is almost over, and spring is all but here! It was a crazy winter in my neck of the woods. It started late, but when it decided to unleash its fury, we were really snowed in! I thought I would chronicle my family’s winter adventures through a gallery of photos we took over the season!

Christmas! One of my favourite times of the year! We had a blast putting up the tree, decorating the house and getting ready for the Man in Red to arrive!

This was the second tree we “put up” this year. I loved it!

The Big Guy has a little bit of everything!

Ah, Christmas morning! Our kids couldn’t wait to open their stockings before breakfast and then their gifts after we ate. Santa was good to our kids, and they were playing all day with their toys!

Food is always a HUGE part of our holiday traditions, and my other half made sure we were fed well with his special chicken dish for Christmas Eve and a terrific turkey dinner for Christmas Day!

With Murphy’s Law at play, the snow came after Christmas! My guy took advantage of our winter wonderland and build a snow fort and a snow hill for our kids to enjoy. We even got the sleds out and tried to get some air time with the little ones on them.

Their smiles were infectious! I t was hard to keep the camera still for these pics!

I think the faces of my daughters says it all!

My little guy LOVED the winter! He would take any chance he could to be outside and play in the snow, even if it was to help me shovel the driveway. He even learned about the hazardous life snowmen live.

My little guy is super helpful!

Oh, the night of the big football game is another favourite part of winter in our home! We got out our projector and watched it on our living room wall as we ate a family favourite for Game Nights: Chicken Nachos! We even dressed up for the night in our jerseys and goofed around. It was a fun night for us all!

There are times during the winter that you just want to stay inside and hide from winter’s frightful fury. There were quite a few nights where we had fun indoors. From a morning sneak attack in bed to a rock out session in our basement, we had a blat without cracking the door open!

This was such a fun night! Maybe we’ll put a band together?

Nature is so beautiful around our home at this time of year. Even though there are no leaves on the trees, the snow and ice take over and create their own breathless magic in our backyard and front yard oasis.

These were just some of the adventures my family had during this roller coaster ride of a winter this year! Now that the snow is beginning to recede, I am REALLY looking forward to all of the awesomeness spring has to offer us this year now that the kids are old enough to really start exploring the world around them. Thank you, Winter, for helping our family to create some amazing memories. We will never forget them!

What part of winter puts a smile on your face?

Mundane Monday Morning Music: The Beatles – “Got to Get You Into My Life”

Morning Readers!

I have been away fro such a long time! Kids being sick for practically a month kept me away for so long. I knew I couldn’t stay away for another Monday morning without sharing a MMMM song.

It’s a gray day here in my neck of the woods. It is also the last Monday of winter!!!! You have no idea just how exciting this is for me. The snow and ice are beginning to disappear, and warmer weather is ushering out the cold breezes we had this winter. I want to start seeing grass and flowers popping out of the ground and begin to enjoy my backyard more.

Since I want spring and the sun to come back into my world, I thought that The Beatles’ “Got to Get You Into My Life” would be a great pick! It’s peppy, upbeat and it’s helping me shoo winter away to make way for spring. I also love this song because my kids love this song of the from The Beatles’ Revolver album and because of the Minions Movie.

So I hope that “Got to Get You Into My Life” lifts the gray skies and bring spring into your mundane Monday morning today! It already has for me!

Until my next post, Readers!

Mundane Monday Morning Music: Queen – “We Will Rock You”

Morning Readers!

I know, I’m a bit late on my MMMM post, but I had to get it out this week. THE Big Game is only six days away, I had to kick the week off right!

Since it’s a sporty-kind of week, I decided to share a fun song that is one of my favourite warm-up songs. It is Queen’s “We Will Rock You.” Along with it being an awesome song by Queen, it’s the perfect song to get going in the morning, as well as to get pumped up and in the spirit for a big game.

So, I hope that this song gets you revved up for the hectic work week ahead, as well as for one of the biggest sporting events of the year (well, for some any way 😛 ). I’ll have my home ready and my football jersey on the whole day this coming Sunday rockin’ this song all day long!

Until my next post, Readers!

Mundane Monday Morning Music: Cyndi Lauper – “Girls Just Want to Have Fun”

Hey Readers!

I know, I’ve been away too long! The holidays, then the start of the New Year have really disoriented me, and, unfortunately, this feature became neglected the chaos. Thankfully, I carved out some time this morning to get back on devout some time to posting a new song to start off the year right.

Some of my fellow bloggers have posed the question, “What word would you use to describe your year?” After a bit of thought and an impromptu family dance session with my family last night of 80s music, I came up with my word of 2016. It is fun. Whether it be in learning, becoming more successful or getting out more, I want to have fun doing it. Besides, what’s the point of living without enjoying the journey you’re on?

Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” encompasses my sense of fun and is such an amazing song to use to start off 2016 for this feature! Besides its unforgettable beat, the lyrics are all about girl empowerment. Lauper is encouraging her parents to not treat her differently because she is a girl. She is also saying that girls should not shy away from their greatness and should be allowed to shine.

So I have decided to take a page from Cyndi Lauper’s playbook this year and have fun, no matter what I’m doing and to make me a better me this year! I hope that “Girls Just Want to Have Fun”has inspired you to be your best you, to have fun, and to take the blahs away on this mundane Monday morning.

Do you have a word that would describe how you want to live this year, or your life?

Until my next post, Readers!

Favourite Fall Memories, 2015

Reese_Speaks_Fall_Chicken_11302015Hey Readers,

I know, it’s been a  while since I’ve shared anything with you. Life got a bit crazy, and this is the first chance since my last post that I have been able to check in.

It’s the last day of November, and for me, it is the last day before the holiday season begins and it is full steam ahead with getting our family and our home ready for it all! It kicks off with Grandma’s (my mom, but she doesn’t have kids anymore,or so she says) birthday, and it snowballs from there.

So to say goodbye to fall, I thought I would share some of may favourite Fall memories from this year with you through pics I snapped.

My little guy is in love with this time of year. We learned this year that he is a huge Halloween fan. He loved every pumpkin and gourd that we passed, wanting to take them home with us. If he had his way, our home would be forever full of them!

Speaking of Halloween, my guy rolled up his sleeves and dove in to getting ready for day! He carved pumpkins, made decorations and dressed up our porch, and took the kids out trick-or-treating. Once back, the kids rocked out in my past Halloween costume wigs before putting and end to the day.

We had a mixed bag of weather this autumn. Some days were warm and gorgeous, while others were, well, blah! On those good days, we made sure to get the kids outside and to enjoy what nice days we had left this year. My other half even had the kids out with him while he raked up the leaves. The job took a bit longer than expected, but the kids had a lot of fun!

The leaves were exceptionally gorgeous in our backyard this year, so I had to capture their beauty in pics! We also had a pumpkin in our backyard that did not make it to Halloween to rest for its final days, so the shutterbug in me had to get a pic of it while it still looked good.

The Japanese Maple lost its leaves early, but there were still a few of them in our yard. Their leaves always alive with colour, no matter the time of year they are present on the tree, and this one just stood out from the rest of the crowd present.

Then, high above the ground in our backyard, there was the golden sea of gold that still shimmered to us from below. It was so stunning. I can’t wait to frame this one!

This little critter decided to visit us on our front porch before getting itself ready for its long slumber. My kids and I got a big kick out it.

Oh, food! The Jack of All Trades in our home whipped together some amazing food for us this season! He loves trying to make delicious dishes from what is left in our Mother Hubbard cupboards as well as some ingredients he picks up from the grocery store. We ate really well this season!

My family had an amazing autumn! We worked hard, played hard and ate well. It is sad to say goodbye to the vibrant colours and warm weather, but it was great to look back and see all of the fun we had!

What were some of your favourite fall memories this year?

Until my next post, Readers!

Mundane Monday Morning Music: Keri Hilson – “Pretty Girl Rock”

Hey Readers!

This feature is back! I’m keeping it short and sweet today because I’m in a time crunch this morning, but I missed my MMMM picks, so I had to share one today!

The weekend was dreary, the kids and I are sick, and sleep pretty much does not exist at this point in time, so I need a pick-me-up!

Keri Hilson came to the rescue this morning! Her anthem song “Pretty Girl Rock” is getting me out of my dense fog so I can clack at my keyboard. Besides having a good beat, this song about positive self image and not hating on others so it’s a win-win for me! This way of thinking is needed as we need to lift people up and be there to support one another more. How can you not stop yourself from dancing and singing along to this song!  I’m doing all of this while mummified from neck to toes (except for my hands) in a blanket. I love it!

I hope that “Pretty Girl Rock” helps get you in a better mood this morning on this mundane Monday morning!

Until my next post, Readers!

Mundane Monday Morning Music: The Black Eyed Peas – ”I Gotta Feeling”

Hey Readers!

I know, I took another week off! My life has been a bit hectic, and I needed a bit of a break. I had to come back this week for this feature because it is one of my favourite weeks of the year. It’s the last week of summer vacation! This is the last unofficial week of summer where families can have fun and get away without having to celebrate a holiday, or for people to have fun before the weather starts to turn and school starts.

Since this is the last week of fun before schedules start to shift, I always have to share a party song that also to help say goodbye to the summer. This week’s MMMM pick to signal the end of summer is The Black Eyed Peas’ ”I Gotta Feeling.” This song is such a fun song to get going in the morning or to hang out with your friends with while relaxing at a barbecue. it’s all about having fun and getting ready to have fun. It focuses on the here and now, enjoying the moment, and not worrying about what tomorrow brings, whether it be work, school or the end of the summer.

I hope that you are able to be in the moment, lift your glass and have some fun for the rest of this summer with ”I Gotta Feeling” on this mundane Monday morning!

Until my next post, Readers!

Mundane Monday Morning Music: Corinne Bailey Rae – “Put Your Records On”

Mornin’ Readers!

The summer is quickly coming to a close, and it has been a short and busy one. I’m getting ready for two ”Bosses” to attend school this year, looking after them during the day, visiting family, and the usual checklist of things I do during the week.

When everything on my list is done, I do like kickin’ back with my other half in our backyard oasis while the ”Bosses” are running around exploring, and relaxing and decompressing. It is rare, especially with toddlers and no babysitter, to just get to chat and have fun. We relish these moments, and take advantage of them as much as possible!

Being able to take a moment out life to relax and inspired this week’s MMMM pick. It is Corinne Bailey Rae’s ”Put Your Records On.” It’s all about relaxing and having fun while chatting and reminiscing about good times. I love doing this with my other half, and I can’t wait to do this with my girls when we get the chance to get together.

I hope ”Put Your Records On” gets you in better spirits and gets you through this mundane Monday morning on a good note!

Until my next post, Readers!
