Family Winter Memories 2017

Hey, Readers!

It has been a while since I have shared some of the memories my family experienced during the beautiful seasons we experience here in Canada’s capital. Now that winter is about to make way for spring in just a few days, I thought I would let your in on some of our favourite moments of winter.

Christmas held many fun memories for our family, but there is more to winter than the holiday season. It is about getting out and enjoying what this frozen season brings.

My other half dragged my butt away from my laptop on many occasions to get out for a run. It snowed on most days we tied up our runners to hit the trails. Though the white fluffy stuff made this workout a bit challenging to pull off, we were thankful for our shades and (somewhat) cleared paths to trek along. The best part about the snow was that it made the scenery around us beautiful, allowing us to marvel at the views around us.

As the snow piled up in here in Ottawa, we were able to spend some fun times in our backyard oasis. The VPs had a ball marching around (because the snow was as high as my knee at times), flopping about and playing with snowballs together.

While the VPs were outside, I decided to have a bit of fun, too! I began embracing being in front of the lens more often. I used a handy tool to give me an assist to make some of these shots happen.

The sun decided to smile on us many times this winter, giving us some unusually warm days. We got the VPs outside to hit the neighbourhood sledding hill. They loved racing down the hill on their sleds and could have stayed there all day long.

There were also times we ventured away from our neighbourhood to take in winter in downtown Ottawa. I took the VP of Cuteness ice skating for the first time at City Hall and she did not want to get off of them.

We also took in Winterlude and some of the other sites while we were strolling around the area. I was even able to snap a shot of my eldest on our way home. The snow covering objects and buildings gave the city a sense of beauty that only happens at this time of the year.

I tried to capture a bit of the gorgeousness of the season. With the temperatures rising and plunging so often this winter, nature decided to show off what it could do leaving some amazing scenes to snap shots of. I have to admit, the frozen fish shot still makes me laugh whenever I see it.

This winter was full of fun and surprises. The thermometer dipped and soared, and with the VPs being a bit older, they got to experience winter more on their own. Though throwing, sledding, and skating make for fun times, we are all on pins and needles waiting for the ice and snow to recede, allowing for the first buds of spring to appear. I can’t wait to be able to show you what my family gets into when this season (finally) appears! Thanks for the fun times and the sweet memories, winter!

Dish with me: What is your favourite part of winter?

Until my next post, Readers!

Reese.

  1. Being from the south, we don’t get snow…and very very little cold weather. I think we’ve only had the heat on one day this winter. I usually spend February and March in Upstate NY. That gets my snow fix covered. This year, due to family emergencies, I’m spent Jan. Feb. and March in North and Central Florida. Oh how I have missed winter outdoor activities.Maybe Next year I’ll be in Idaho for some cold weather and snow.

    • Sorry you did not get to enjoy the snow this winter, Elizabeth. 😦 I only winters with snow. The one time I was in a warm climate during winter was when I was visiting family in Memphis. It was a weird to be waling around in lighter clothing. I hope you do make it to Idaho next winter!

  2. Aww your pictures are so adorable! Looks like you’ve captured some of the best memories from this winter season. Where I am it’s still totally winter – we just got a foot of snow!

  3. What a fabulous winter you had! Your kids are so cute!! I am so proud of you that you went running in the snow! I’m a woose and only run in the nice weather (read spring and fall)! I work outdoors during the day, so I hide from winter! My fav winter moment this year was sledding with my kids!

    • Thanks, Jennifer! I love working outdoors when the weather is nice as well. Going for runs in the snow were my other half’s idea, and I was dragging myself home. Sledding was one of my fav moments as well!

  4. I like the 150 ice sculpture. I have heard that Canada is celebrating their 150th this year, which is super cool. I like all of your photos. Looks like a great time!

  5. Aw so much fun for your family this winter! We used to live where there are 4 seasons; now we are in California we don’t get any snow. I wish my children would get the chance to play with snow at least for a couple of winters growing up! I miss making snowballs and building snowman πŸ™‚

    • Thanks, The Terrific Five! For me, winter would not be the same without snow. Both of my kids love snow and could be outside in it all day. I hope your kids will have the chance to play in snow, too

  6. We have had very little snow this year. Looking at your photos made me realize that maybe I do actually like it a little bit! LOL Great job getting in front of the camera more. I definitely struggle with this and need to make it a point to be in photos, too.

    • Thanks, Kristy! Snow can be really beautiful. It is hard to be in front of the camera as I always worry about what I look like. I also realized that I should be in more photos, especially with my kids so there are more memories of us rogether

    • Thanks, Bites for Foodies! I think great photography is about putting a story into every shot. I’m still working out the kinks of taking beautiful photos. My kids and nature gave the beauty to these shots

  7. These winter photos are absolutely amazing, it almost makes me want another snowfall….. almost! I can’t lie, I am a little over the snow, I am so ready for spring but I am so glad you had a beautiful winter. These pictures are simply gorgeous!

  8. What a great post. It gives a whole new perspective to the winter season plus it doesn’t hurt that you live in a gorgeous place. My favorite part of winter is the relaxation. I stopped gift giving and instead enjoy quality time hanging out with friends and family. It slows things down and I love it. Plus, I work out more in the winter. Gyms are slower so I get more free space.

    • Thanks, Allison! Winters can be gorgeous here in Ottawa, but it can also be super cold! I hear you about working out at the gym in the winter. You’d think it would be more crowded because it is cold outside

  9. I always love the photos on your blog! So many great ones here. Toboggans have been pretty big in our home too this year πŸ™‚ But I’ll be happy to welcome in spring.

  10. We finally got another big snowfall in Chicago…it didn’t snow all January or February so we definitely missed it this winter. Sounds like you have a blast living in a Winter Wonderland!

  11. Living in the deep south, Georgia, we rarely ever see a ‘good snow’. If we see a few flakes we get excited but our snowy weather usually brings ice which is quite unwanted. We love watching movies, especially holiday movies with snow scenes like you are living. It is just beautiful and your outdoor activities sound so fun.

    • Thanks, swood97. I would not know what to do without snow during the winter. We usually have a Movie Night, but it is great to be able to snuggle with our kids during these chilly nights

  12. What a fabulous time it looks like you are having this winter. We don’t get much snow here, but the kids do like to visit the indoor skating rink. It’s not as cool as having an outdoor one available!

    • Thanks, Pam! Skating on an outdoor rink or the Rideau Canal (the longest skating rink in the world) is a totally different experience. The cold can be worse, but being out on the ice with other people with nature and snow falling is like nothing else in the world

  13. Awww, it looks like you had a great winter and made lots of wonderful memories. I loved looking at all your pictures πŸ™‚

  14. Fellow Canadian here *waves Canadian olympic mittens at you*
I really want to visit Ottawa in the winter – just so my son can go and skate in the canal! We usually go and visit Ottawa in the summer when we are camping in Algonquin. I love it there!
My favourite thing in winter is watching my son play hockey. Other then that, I stay bundled up πŸ™‚
Your hair is gorgeous by the way!!!

    • Thanks so much, Kimberly! These mitts are fabulous and helped me get through the winter. Skating on the Rideau Canal is an experience like no other. I’ve done it at night and during the day and it is magical. I hope you make it here to cross off this bucket list item.

  15. It was a crazy winter here too in Upstate NY with the temps dipping, and February temps as high as 70! But we finally got a snowstorm with 2′ of snow, so it is nice to have some snowcover. The kids are always happy to get out in the snow!

  16. My favorite part of winter is the ice fishing and the sledding we have in our area. We have so much fun going sledding even though my kids are now men. Thanks for sharing your winter memories.

  17. I love the snow but I hate being snowed-in. I love watching my grandchildren play in the snow and make their own “snow dwarfs” (they’re really small). It is the memories that matter most, snow or no snow. πŸ™‚
